My first interaction with Garchen Rinpoche fascinated me not only from his presence and teaching, also his example in practice of smiles and constantly turning his prayer wheel amplifying his Buddhist prayer. Naturally, encountering prayer wheels around monasteries and around the Great Stupa in Bohdgaya, amplified my prayers and began my understanding of the use and power of prayer wheels.
During an empowerment and teaching by Garchen Rinpoche in Albuquerque,NM, I met Chuck of Heartwood prayer wheels. I was inspired and in awe of the use of technology and microfilm for multiplying the number of mantras in the prayer wheel thereby amplifying it’s power. Chuck Pettis and His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen Sakya, one of the revered Tibetan Buddhist leaders, oversaw the design and construction of the prayer wheels that use DVD’s for writing mantras instead of microfilm. H.H. Jigdal Dagchen Sakya is a Head Lama of the Sakya sect and Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in Seattle. Sakya leaders hold a position third only to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in rank. The prayers in all the DVDs used in each Tibet Tech prayer wheel are blessed and consecrated by His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen Rinpoche. He has said that “as long as the Universe exists, the consecrated prayers will remain potent.”. Chuck Pettis and Tibet Tech further expanded the use of technology beyond writing mantras to DVD’s with solar powered and electric turning prayer wheels amplify my personal prayers to this day.
When discussing with Chuck Pettis of Tibet Techfor creating a desktop prayer wheel to purchase, I began looking at what mantras I wanted to include in my own personal desktop prayer wheel, I began meditating on which mantras were important for me to include in my daily practice and prayer wheel. Some of my normal practice mantras were not available, so I followed the guidelines of Tibet Tech and instructions from Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Lama Zopa Rinpoche, whose organization, FMPT supplies microfilm for stupas and prayer wheels, I was able to construct a prayer wheel with all my desired mantras to maximize my practice.
The numbers on a single DVD ranges from 9 complete collections of the Pali Canon –to 700 Billion of Om Ah Hung or 318 Billion Om Mani Peme Hung. All mantras are in Sanskrit or Tibetian and consecrated in the manner outlined by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. The DVD’s were constructed in the manner outlined by Tibet Tech with one simple change. The Tibet Tech instructions outlined saving an excel spread sheet as a PDF, and then zipping the pdf files with further compression. Twenty years ago, I learned about computer compression, and Adobe pdf is merely a compression program, and zip is also a compression program. When experimenting, making the DVD’s that were not available from Tibet Tech, I discovered that going directly to a zip file allowed about ten times more mantras to be included on the DVD. I want to make these DVD’s available to all to maximize the power of Stupas and prayer wheels to maximize all Sangha’s prayer power.
